A Time of Rebirth
Spring has always been special for me.
My beloved dogwood trees are blooming here in Virginia, the forest has begun to show her vibrant spring colors and the robins have started to appear after their winter vacation. I love spring. New beginnings. Rebirth. Physical, emotional and spiritual rebirth.
That’s what’s happening for me now.
I’m exploring yoga, working on a new high-performance coaching certification (which I’ll be offering later this year) and delving even deeper into my study of A Course in Miracles.
It’s always been easier for me to start a new path then to finish it. Commitment hasn’t always led to easy follow through. I procrastinate. Postpone. Find lots of distractions. Part of the high-performance techniques I’ve learned have helped me tremendously which is why I want to share them with others.
I feel a new chapter starting for me and my family this spring… it’s exciting, scary and exhilarating all at the same time.
I feel a renewed passion for life which I attribute to three things. After several years, I feel the trauma of my dad’s passing is now behind me. While I miss him, the grief has shifted and I feel a level of healing I’ve not experienced before. My new grandson, Emory, has opened my heart in ways I couldn’t have imagined and I feel a deep need to contribute in new ways to help create a more loving world for him to grow up in. And I have a birthday coming up this week.
A big one.
It ends in a zero.
I used to think sixty was “getting up there.” Time to rock grandbabies, bake pies, spout wisdom…and wait for the end. What a difference a few decades make! My perceptions of aging started to change when a good friend gave me the book “You Can Heal Your Life” by Louise Hay.
WOW!
Here was a woman who had faced overwhelming challenges and triumphed over each. Her life could easily be a blockbuster Lifetime movie! She’s become a living example for me in so many ways. While she had a fascinating life particularly in her forties and fifties, she did something extraordinary after that.
What did Louise do at sixty? Started Hay House which is now recognized as one of the leading new thought, self-development publishers on the planet. Some of my greatest insights, understandings and personal growth came from books, events and connections I’ve made thanks to Hay House.
But Miss Louise didn’t stop there.
In the following decades, she took up organic gardening, painting and sculpture, ballroom dancing and continued to publish her own books, classes and programs. And for over twenty years continued to travel around the world appearing to thousands of delighted fans in numerous live events each year.
Now over ninety, she continues to inspire all who know her and her work.
Amazing.
Incredible.
And if Louise can do it, so can I.
So can you. So can anyone committed to growth and intending to have fun along the journey.
Here’s to spring. Our rebirth as individuals and in community. To us all beginning a new chapter, continuing to grow and to finding ways to love deeper and laugh more!
Thanks, Louise…

A Birthday Note to My 21 Year Old Self
On my birthday I spontaneously decided to write a note to my younger self:
Dear 21 year old Diane,
I'm writing from 35+ (ok ++) years in the future to let you know everything turns out just fine. Life is good. Thought I'd share some tips to help get you through the next few decades:
Calm down. Really. Just calm down. Nothing you think is a big deal IS, in the grand scheme of things, and the things that really ARE a big deal sneaked up on you anyway. It’s OK. You get through it.
Get off the crazy train. This is a big one. Learning that only your own thoughts create your reality will change your life forever. You’re the one making yourself sick with fear and worry. Other people aren’t driving you crazy, your thoughts about other people make you feel crazy! Stop it. Read Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, Florence Scovel Shinn’s The Game of Life and How to Play It, Louise Hay’s You Can Heal Your Life and anything by Dr. Wayne Dyer as soon as you can.
Quit participating in other people’s drama. You don’t have time for this. Yeah, it may make you feel wanted to listen for hours to some perceived slight endured by a friend but it will never be productive. Learn the difference between someone who truly wants and needs help and those who just like to bitch. Being of service and helping others through difficult challenges is a fantastic way to spend your time. Listening to gossip or bitching is not. Do not gossip or bitch yourself. The friend who tells you that “you’re just getting it off your chest and bitching will make you feel better” is wrong. You’ll come up with this phrase in 2015 and learn to live by it: “There may be drama all around you, but you don’t have to buy a ticket to the show.”
Understand your exterior world reflects your interior world. It really does. When you see someone in your life not being authentic, ask yourself “where in my own life am I not being authentic?” This is a hard lesson but a great one! When you feel love for yourself, you see love in the world. When you feel fear, you see things all around you to be afraid of. When you judge yourself, you judge the world. I’m not kidding. Learning to look inside first will save you tons of time and at least a few years of therapy.
Romance isn’t always easy. Well, for you at least. It takes three tries to get a husband who loves you for who you are and adores your family. Keep at it. He’s far from perfect, but then again, neither are you. The important thing is to grow together in respect and love. When things get rough, ask yourself, “what is being reflected back to me in this situation?” Remember he’s one of your teachers in this life. You both learn from each other how to love on a deeper level. Hang in there. It’s a wonderful experience once you get on track!
The kids turn out to be your greatest joy. I know you question the whole kid thing and wonder if it’s for you. It is. Your son and daughter prove to be your most significant life teachers and bring you more love than you ever thought your heart could hold. Even through the hard times, remember they are God’s perfect reflection of love. They grow up to be such beautiful, soulful people who are spreading light throughout this planet. They are a huge blessing in your life and in the lives of many others. And you get a bonus! When you marry your third husband you get two more kids to love (without the pain of childbirth or additional stretch marks…score!)
Take your nose off the grindstone every once in a while. Yes, you have a great work ethic and love to be the one to take care of extended family, but lighten up. Go to more parties, especially where you’re not in charge. Give others a chance to shine and you'll stop complaining about being the one doing all the work. Take more nature walks. Play with your kids when they’re young. Enjoy simple pleasures. Quit obsessing about your weight. Stop worrying about money. Enjoy life more. You get better at this, but no harm in starting as soon as you’re aware that you can be a bit of a hard ass. Now you’re aware.
Life is hard. And life is fantastic. You’ll grow and benefit from it all. Ok, I’m not gonna lie. You have some rough stuff coming up. Heartache, tragedy and trauma will come to you. And you’ll have angels in the guise of family, friends and professionals to help you heal. You’ll find resources in books, classes and teachers that will help you process your pain into wisdom. Exploring spirituality becomes your passion. You'll discover the truth about the divine energy of love within you that will lead to true joy. You’ll meet a few jerks, too. That’s OK...you'll eventually figure out they were an important part of your evolution. Don’t back away from the pain. Meet it head on. Move through it with as much love as possible. I swear it’ll be worth it.
Meditation is always the answer. This is your life saver. You learn to meditate in your thirties, but if you can manage it sooner, it calms everything down. You get healthier in mind, body and spirit with the continued practice and for the rest of your life you preach its benefits to anyone who’ll listen. Find the calm place inside where you can hear the quiet truth of your own heart. God lives there.
Every day, every minute, in every situation ask yourself, “What does love look like here? Love for myself and love for everyone involved?” And then ask yourself, “How does love move me forward?” Ok, this is the biggie…learning this changes everything in your life for the better. Understand EVERYONE is a child of the intelligent, creative, expansive energy of love and that energy runs through everything on this and every other planet. We're talking divine love, not the "I love my slippers" kinda love. It's this energy of creation that is responsible for everything, everywhere across all space and time. Understand this and you've got everything you'll ever need. Use love to understand and act in all situations, especially the challenging ones. You eventually understand that your goal is to live from love. You’ll work on this the rest of your life. The joy this brings, the incredible experiences, the fabulous people…it would blow your mind if you knew what’s coming. Just trust me. A life lived through divine love is your work in this lifetime. And it’s so much more fun than you think it’s gonna be!
Ok, now go live your own life. Enjoy yourself and understand the process of living brings incredible lessons. Embrace that truth. Live from love.
Sending you much love from your very cool future,
2016 Diane
P.S. You’re going to meet a super cute guy in college. It doesn’t end well. Do it anyway…you’ll be smiling for years.

Touched by a Great Spirit

I never personally met Dr. Dyer, but like many across the planet, his teachings have helped shape the person I am today. He was an awe-inspiring author and speaker who helped people find real solutions to everyday problems. His books helped me find my spiritual center and taught me to use that to improve every area of my life. Dyer is powerful on the page, but in person he was mesmerizing.
I saw him three times at various Hay House I CAN DO IT events in the last several years. No matter how far I sat from the stage, I could literally “feel” his presence and was riveted by the passion he brought to his talks. He was honest about his own challenges and failures. He was open about his own early resentments and how the power of forgiveness forever changed his life. He was a peaceful and powerful presence who seemed to exude love for all.
The most impressive to me, however, is how a self-help spiritual author and speaker positively and profoundly influenced the lives of so many people in our world. Not a politician, not an actor, not an athlete, but an author. What an incredible testament to the power of his work.
I am forever grateful there are people like Wayne Dyer who write, speak and live love. They remind us we are one, united by the same Divine energy that runs through us all. They point out that in any situation we can react from fear, or we can react from love. Thanks to Wayne Dyer’s teachings, millions are aware of this choice, and choose love.

Oops! I Did It Again….
Recently I was in Denver attending the Hay House I CAN DO IT conference. It was beyond awesome! Three days of incredible workshops, thousands of like-minded participants and the excitement of a new city all added to the uplifting messages being delivered by some of the most experienced spiritual authors on the planet. Everyone felt loved, supported and encouraged to consciously create the life that would support their highest dreams. I spent the weekend floating on a cloud of love….until I got knocked down to reality.
It was early Saturday afternoon and I had just come from a workshop given by one of my favorites, Dr. Robert Holden. In his humorous style, Robert had reminded us that a key way to enjoy life is to be fully in it. And the way to be fully in it is to stay in the present moment. His message reiterated what I’d heard earlier from Dr. Wayne Dyer, Cheryl Richardson and Dr. Christiane Northrup. I knew they were right. I taught this principle to my coaching clients and even gave them instructions on how to do it.
Just when I thought, “I got this,” I remembered my mind had been wandering a bit during the conference. I was scheduled to do my first national book signing event later that day and I was a tad nervous. Maybe I was missing something? What if I wasn’t fully present to this entire experience and missed a tidbit critical to my spiritual development? My frantic mind was racing now.
“Pull yourself together, girl,” I thought as I left a break out session and headed to the main convention hall.
“Be present. Be present to it all!” I told myself as I walked the cavernous hallways toward my destination.
I began to walk deliberately, feeling the ground beneath my feet.
I looked into the smiling faces of the other participants, watching their expressions and seeing the true beauty reflected in each one. I looked at the colors that surrounded me in the art displayed in the center and in the clothes and jewelry worn by the people I passed.
I listened to the sounds of laughter and heard snippets of excited conversations as people shared stories with each other.
I smelled burgers, pizza and fresh juices offered by the on-site vendors.
I was determined to BE in the moment and experience everything. But I missed something.
I missed the sign that said “Men” as I mistakenly wandered into the men’s room. I had been very focused on feeling my feet at the time and being fully present to my body. Wish I’d been a bit more aware of where I was going.
I was looking down as I marched into the restroom and heard a weird splashing sound. I looked up to see the back of a gentleman hunched over a urinal. OMG!
In that moment, I was fully present! All my senses became hyper active as I quickly exited the area. I felt my cheeks getting red as I started to laugh at myself.
The refrain of the old Brittany Spears song played in my head, “Oops, I did it again.” My ego was so determined to be in the moment, that I failed to allow the Divine part of me to simply be and enjoy the experience.
The lesson wasn’t lost on me. Sometimes I’m just too much “in my head.” Back to allowing myself to be more like a little child. They don’t have to “be determined” to be in the present moment. They just are.

I Can’t Make This Stuff Up
Oprah, Deepak Chopra and Louise Hay are just a few of the many people who believe that what you think creates your reality. I certainly believe it! Chapter three of my book “How to Choose Love When You Just Want to Slap Somebody” is about just that. It’s entitled “You Are What You Think” and now I have a new story to prove it.
Twice in the last two weeks I’ve mentioned a magazine to people in casual conversation and, more specifically, a particular annual issue of that magazine. Both times I noted silently to myself that I’d like to see that issue when it comes out this spring. I felt strongly there was something I needed to see. Then I forgot all about it. That is until the specific issue of that specific magazine showed up in my mail box.
My husband brings the mail home from our post office in town. As I was going through the mail pile a couple days ago, I spotted it – the magazine! I don’t subscribe to it and was shocked to see in my hands not only the magazine I’d been talking about, but the exact annual issue I’d wanted to see.
“Whaaat?” I said out loud. “Where’d this come from?” I wondered. I noticed the magazine was addressed to someone whose post office box was directly underneath mine. “WOW! Just what I wanted!”
“OK, it’s a coincidence,” my husband said.
“The exact issue I was thinking about? I manifested this!” I countered.
I started flipping through the pages and asked silently, “Now what am I supposed to see here?” The magazine fell open to an article that answered a question I was having in my business. Yeah, a coincidence. Right. I can’t make this stuff up.
I copied the article and returned the magazine to the post office so it could be delivered to its owner. I’d already had the magazine delivered to me by the Universe.
At least that’s what I think.

A Thanksgiving Story: What If Life is Working FOR You?
This
Thanksgiving story is from my book, "How to Choose Love When You Just Want to
Slap Somebody", and it’s one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy a beautiful
holiday!
Consider this: Life is working FOR me. Life is working FOR me? What a concept!
Have you looked at my life? All the petty inconveniences of life like missing
car keys, being late for work, only finding one sock, PC crashes — as well as
the struggles, pain, and loss—all working FOR my benefit? And the benefit of
others? How could that be? As long as I was focused on the drama of the day,
this certainly didn’t seem possible. When I consciously choose love as my
guide, however, it’s an accepted - and expected - way of life. It took an
interesting trail of events to help me realize the truth of this statement.
Here’s how it happened.
I’ve been contemplating this very principle and
working (yes, working…it didn’t come easily) to allow myself to truly believe
that whatever happened, appeared to happen, or looked like it might happen was
all for my ultimate good. When discussing this with a few close friends,
several had the same question: “Are you nuts?”
Regardless of my skeptical buddies, I was
determined to explore the idea. I must admit it was much more of a challenge
than I anticipated.
I had been introduced to this theory several years
ago in the writings of Louise Hay. I had just begun to discover
metaphysical/spiritual literature then and was reading everything I could to
understand how my actions and thoughts did indeed create my own experience.
This little gem of wisdom must have slipped through the cracks, only to be
reintroduced when I attended a five-day “Coaching Success” program with Dr.
Robert Holden in New York.
In the safe but intense environment of Robert’s
workshop, we delved into the meaning of success, happiness, and yes, the
concept that “Life is working FOR you” and how shifting your belief to accept
this can positively shift your experience of life. It was a busy, fun, and
eye-opening five days! All this was well and good and totally believable as
long as I was in the group environment with like-minded folks who were willing
to give it a shot too. Then I went home.
I’ll never forget the next several days—when I
first realized Life was working FOR me. Robert’s
program had ended on the Sunday evening before Thanksgiving 2012, and I spent
that evening relishing the new concepts I’d learned and how I’d incorporate
them into my coaching practice. I boarded the train home on Monday, still full
of excitement. The next two days were filled with clients as I played “catch
up” in the office after being gone for a week.
In a moment of “Why did I do that?” I suddenly
realized on Wednesday that I had volunteered to bring a pumpkin pie to my
brother’s house, where my family would gather for our Thanksgiving feast. Maybe
I was nuts! I’d just come back from a
week of training and was working long hours to see a week’s worth of clients in
two days. Now yes, I could have purchased a pumpkin pie from the grocery store,
but I had gone into great detail with
my family about the merits of my recipe
and how we simply must have a homemade pie. My sister really should have
stopped me, but she didn’t. Now I was fretting over the stupid pie, and anyone
who understands the importance of a good pumpkin pie to the overall success of
Thanksgiving knows this was close to a full blown crisis.
Then I remembered.
What if
Life was working for me? Yeah, I had momentarily forgotten my new mantra: “Life is working FOR me!” OK, it’ll all
work out I thought. I surrendered to this truth and decided I’d finish with my
clients and proceed to the store. At that point, I’d assess how tired I was and
either purchase a “store bought” pie or the ingredients to make one. I felt the
stress leave my body.
Then it happened—my first miracle. One of my
favorite clients came in for her session bearing a huge pumpkin pie made by our
local five-star bakery. This was the same pie that had been awarded “Washington
DC Area’s Best Pumpkin Pie” only days before by a respected regional magazine.
Oh yeah, crisis averted! While the irony and timing wasn’t lost on me, I, being
human, still needed a bit more convincing.
By Thanksgiving morning, I was in a panic as I
prepared for what would be a new tradition for my family. After a year of
serious health issues, my Dad was now living in a memory support unit at a
local assisted living facility and unable to travel even short distances to be
with the family for Thanksgiving. Mom died a few years before and I wanted to
see my Dad on our favorite holiday. I was determined to see him in the morning,
but I still needed to prepare my side dish for the dinner I would share with my
husband, adult children, brother, sister, and their families. Of course I was
running late. I’m a “planner” and had meticulously planned every minute of the
morning to coordinate all my activities but failed to schedule time for
“issues.” Suddenly the ultimate planner was having issues!
I was working on the side dish I was slated to
bring to dinner along with my fabulous pumpkin pie when disaster struck
again…no lemon juice. Crap! We live almost 15 miles from a grocery store, and
there was simply no time to make the trek to town, purchase lemon juice, get
back to the house, prepare the dish, go see Dad, and get to my brother’s in
time. Now I know to the untrained eye, this looks far from a disaster, but to a
stressed, overwhelmed working woman, this is just the tiny issue that can put
us over the edge. To add to my stress, I had chosen a recipe from a friend who
had died two years before as a way of including her in our celebration. So I
probably pissed off a dead woman by forgetting the lemon juice. What was I thinking?
I took a deep breath and repeated “What if Life is
working FOR me?” several times until I truly felt a sense of peace and
acceptance. I knew whatever came would be perfect for all involved (living or
dead). Within minutes, my husband, Joe, appeared in the kitchen and asked how I
was doing.
I told him my recipe was “ruined” because I had
failed to buy lemon juice. He looked puzzled, and then with a gleam in his eye
he said “I’ll be right back!” Within five minutes he was back in the kitchen
with one perfect fresh lemon! “It’s November in Virginia…. where did
you get that?” I asked in amazement. He reminded me that my friend Robin had
given me a lemon tree the previous April for my birthday. He’d noticed it
wasn’t doing well in my office and had taken it to his private sanctuary,
“Manland,” which is in a building separate from our house. I never go there—it is Manland after all. The
lemon tree had revived, and he’d noticed just the day before that it bore one
perfect lemon. I juiced it, and, of course, it yielded exactly the amount of
juice needed for the recipe. I finished mixing my dish and popped it in the
oven while I jumped in the shower to get ready. Another crisis averted! I was
really starting to like this “Life working FOR me” thing.
Life was not finished with me just yet.
As I was getting dressed, I noticed my pants were a
bit baggy…YAY! I remember thinking that I wished I had a pair in the next
smaller size to try. Too bad. As I was looking for the perfect Thanksgiving
blouse, I noticed a bag on the floor in the back of my closet. What was that? I
looked inside and found three pairs of
pants in the next smaller size. What?! I never bought these and didn’t
remember where they came from. I quickly found a pair that fit nicely.
Life is working
FOR me…I repeated it over and over as Joe and I
drove to see my Dad in his new “home.” While the visit was far from the
holidays I remember in the past, I can truly say I enjoyed it. I consciously
stayed in the moment with him, where he was mentally and physically at that
time, and accepted it for the gift that it was: another Thanksgiving with my
Dad.
The rest of the day flowed beautifully, and we had
a fun day feasting with family, laughing, and telling stories that began with,
“Back in our day…” to our adult children. As I related my amazing few days to
my sister, she reminded me that she had given me the bag of smaller pants a
year earlier. I had totally forgotten! The news just added to the magic of the
day.
A free pumpkin pie, a lemon, and even smaller pants
couldn’t beat the miracle of accepting my Dad where he was and truly being
grateful for the gift of another day with him on the planet.
I get it. I really get it. Life IS working FOR me,
and whenever I open my eyes, I see it in action. And Life is working for you
too. And each of your family members, and your neighbors, your boss and every
single person who is currently feeling frustrated by life. They just don’t know
it yet.
Now will you have lemons and pants magically appear
just when you need them? I’m not sure of that, but I am sure you’ll handle any
situation better when you remember “Life is working FOR you.” And yes, even
painful and challenging life events will be easier to weather.
Remember to
Remember
So how can you remember that “Life is working FOR
you?” Begin by saying it over and over as a mantra or affirmation. Say it in
the morning when you get out of bed. Let it be the last thought you have a
night and repeat it as many times in between as you can remember throughout the
day.
Keep a note taped on your bathroom mirror. Make
“Life is working FOR me” scroll across your computer screen. Put the phrase in
your car where you’ll see it often and use it.
The key with this concept is to accept that Life is
working for you and everyone else without trying to figure out the how. That’s not your job. Yours is to trust the Divine Source that creates
life itself, makes the sun rise, the tides come in and the flowers bloom is
orchestrating all on your behalf whether you understand it or not.
When you trust that all is ultimately working for
your benefit, your perspective instantly changes. You relax. You can weather
situations more easily and with more clarity. Instead of feeling like a victim,
you open up to possibilities. Again, believing Life is on your side doesn’t
exempt you from sadness, grief or tragic events. It does help you see with more
loving eyes, hear with more loving ears and feel with a more open loving heart.
Life is working FOR me. What a concept!
